Sydney athlete Dani Samuels has won Australias first medal in any sport at this years World University Games in Belgrade, securing the gold medal in the discus overnight.

Olympic bronze medallist Tasha Danvers has ruled out the possibility of competing in August’s IAAF World Championships due to an injury to her right hamstring. The injury first occurred on 10 June.

The 2009 Women’s 17 European Championship took place in Serbia from the 25th June – 5th July. Fifty-six matches were played in the sport halls of Nis and Vrnjacka Banja. The competition came to an end on Sunday in a final between Denmark and Russia in front of 1000 spectators.

The 8th seed Iveta Benesova and 6th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova both lost in their second round matches. Benesova lost to Russian Alla Kudryavtseva and fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko defeated Pavlyuchenkova. The Budapest Grand Prix saw Shahar Peer continue her good form by defeating Alize Cornet of France 62 60.

Double Olympic Gold Medal winner Sarah Webb, OBE, sent a message of good luck to the England Womens rugby team ahead of a busy season which includes the Nations Cup next month, the RBS 6 Nations and the 2010 IRB Womens Rugby World Cup.
