Ukraine defeat Czech Republic in LEN Quarter Final

Ukraine came out on top in a tightly contested quarter final and will face Czech Republic after beating Portugal 11-7.

The match looked as if it would go down to the wire as the teams could not be separated after the first three quarters.

They went into the first break even with just two goals being scored, Mariana Sarmento, as ever, for Portugal and Kateryna Degtyarova for Ukraine.

The scoring opened up in the second quarter, though and Ukraine took a 4-3 lead going into the second half.

Anastasiya Kotova, Olga Shvedova and Degtyarova helped the Ukrainians, with Sarmento scoring one and assisting Vania Vieira to reply for their opponents.

Vieira was to score one more goal as Sarmento, once again, flew the Portuguese flag, scoring five of their seven goals.

Portugal would have been happy to go into the final quarter leading 6-5 but their opponents came out of the block much quicker and put them under pressure.

Shevedova was to score three more as both Kotova and Degtyarova both completed hat-tricks to set up a clash against a side they have already lost to once in Manchester.

Ukraine eventually won the last eight minutes 6-1 to wrap up a win which was closer than the score suggests.

After the close encounter, an elated four-goal Shvedova said: “It was a difficult game and so, so important for us and we are really so happy.  I cannot find the words to say!

“We will play tomorrow and try to win, that is all we can do,” she added.
