14th seed Maria Sharapova was defeated by fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko in three sets 76 36 62. Sharapova was the firm favourite to win the match but Kirilenko stayed calm and matched ball for ball to continue into the second round. WC Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters and Britains Elena Baltacha all made it through.
