Less than two weeks after the scheme, a joint initiative between UK Sport and the English Institute for Sport, was launched it has attracted 850 applications already.
Officials said that is about the same number of women who applied to an earlier initiative, Sporting Giants, which received more nationwide publicity.
Nearly 500 of the applications from women aged between the ages of 17 and 25 who were able to show sporting ability to at least to around county standard in any sport, have been processed
With the campaign due to run for at least another two weeks officials are hopeful that they will break the 1,000 barrier.
The scheme may also be re-launched in the autumn after the Beijing Olympics when the new university year begins.
A spokesman for UK Sport said: “We are delighted to have over 800 applications currently either completed or being filled out from young women who might never previously have thought of themselves as Olympians.
"It is early days, and we would hope for more when the entry date closes, but so far we are seeing a good return – it shows how 2012 is able to draw new people towards Olympic sport.”
