Ninth place for Dobson at Radial Europeans

Skandia Team GBR’s Laser Radial sailors will look to learn the lessons of a tough European Championship as they head to Japan for their Worlds later this month.

Charlotte Dobson’s was the best British performance at this week’s Laser Radial European Championships in Denmark, with the 23-year-old from Helensburgh picking up her best ever European Championship result.

Charlotte Dobson’s was the best British performance at this week’s Laser Radial European Championships in Denmark, with the 23-year-old from Helensburgh picking up her best ever European Championship result.

She finished as the ninth European sailor and top Skandia Team GBR boat at the six-day event in Charlottenlund, but had been up in the podium positions in the early stages of the regatta.

It proved a tough event with shifty and unpredictable conditions, and with a day’s action lost due to a lack of wind.  Dobson had fared well in the opening six races, but heading into the final series of four races, she struggled to match her early regatta form and ended her Europeans campaign in tenth place on the overall leaderboard, and ninth European boat.

Paige Railey won the overall regatta, but being as a US national does not qualify for the European crown which instead went to Tina Mihelic of Croatia.

Alison Young’s was the second best British performance, with her finishing as the 23rd European sailor, 2008 world bronze medallist Andrea Brewster was 25th while Olympian Christina Bassadone, competing in only her fourth Radial event since switching from the double-handed 470 after Beijing, was 35th.

“Conditions have been pretty tricky with lots of offshore wind and current so it was quite hard for anyone to be conservative, particularly on the last day,” commented Skandia Team GBR Laser Radial coach Tom Saunt on the week.

“There were a few missed opportunities on the first day of the finals series where things could have gone better for Charlotte, but otherwise she sailed really well and should take a lot out of this event ahead of the Worlds.”

Skandia Team GBR’s Laser Radial sailors are now on their way to Karatsu, Japan, for the Laser Radial World Championships which run from 25 July-2 August.
