Malta targets first-ever Olympic medal at London 2012

Malta targets first-ever Olympic medal at London 2012MALTA should set up a technical committee with the target of winning its first-ever Olympic medal at the London 2012 Games, a leading official said today.

Mark Cutajar is one of the two candidates contesting the election for the post of sports director at the Malta Olympic Committee (MOC).

Cutajar, head of sport at television channel One TV, wants to establish a new committee that would develop sport on the Mediterranean island.

He said: "Such synergy is needed.

"If we work together, there will definitely be an improvement in local sport standards."

Malta, which has a population of 410,000, made its debut in the Olympics at Amsterdam in 1928 and has competed in 13 Games since, including London in 1948, but is still waiting for its first medal.

Cutajar said: "We have the Games for European Small States in Liechtenstein in 2011 and the 2012 London Olympic Games.

"My main target is that of trying our best to gain a first ever Olympic medal in the London Games."

The post has become available after Pippo Psaila resigned following a row with MOC officials.

The other candidate for the role is John Zammit, the president of Malta's cycling association.

Cutajar is already the director of sport for all at the MOC, a post he was elected three months ago.

He said: "Since that November election, I have been working on a project which also involves the local councils.

"I am convinced it will be a huge success as it will incorporate all levels of society, from youngsters and those 60 years plus."
