Helena Lucas scooped Britain’s first medal of the ISAF Sailing World Cup event in Palma, Majorca, on Thursday (9 April), with British sailors poised in six more podium spots heading into the final day of racing on Good Friday.
Lucas finished third in the 2.4mR Paralympic class, with teammate Megan Pascoe finishing in fourth on equal points but just missing out on the bronze on countback.
The 2.4mR is featuring at this Princess Sofia Trophy for the first time, and Lucas’s early bronze will be a boost for Skandia Team GBR heading in to the final day where 13 British boats will feature in the medal races.
Skandia Team GBR will also have three boats in the women’s 470 medal race, with Penny Clark and Saskia Clark notching up two race wins on Thursday to boost them up into fourth place going into the final showdown. They’ll be joined by Hannah Mills and Katrina Hughes, currently in sixth overall, and ninth-placed Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth.
“I’m really pleased with today,” explained Penny Clark. “It was tactical racing so we got to do our thing and not have to worry about boat speed which made a big difference.
“We’ve already overdone our expectations,” Penny continued on their performance at her first 470 international regatta after joining forces with Beijing representative Saskia. “We’re doing much better upwind than I thought, but our starting is terrible and downwind needs a lot of work!”
Bryony Shaw is in fourth place going into the final day of racing in the RS:X Women’s fleet.
The final medal races at the Princess Sofia Trophy take place on Friday 10 April. For full results and further information, visit http://www.skandiateamgbr.com/events/princsoftrop/Pages/princsoftrop.aspx
