The Effects, Benefits, and Uses of CBD Oil in Pain Management

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been used over the years to relieve pain and treat other common ailments and mental disorders. However, there is a need to conduct more scientific research to be sure that CBD is safe for such uses. While some people experience side effects when using CBD oil, there are also other considerations to make before using it to deal with pain and other issues.

This article delves into how CBD oil works, its effects, and how it can be used to relieve pain, especially chronic ones, to dispel the stigma associated with CBD.

How CBD oil works and its effects

CBD is one of the many compounds (over 120) called cannabinoids found in some plants such as cannabis, and that is why it is associated with the cannabis plant. CBD does not have a psychoactive or "high" effect like other cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is because CBD does not affect the same receptors as THC and other cannabinoids.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the human body receives and translates signals from the cannabinoids. This system also produces its own cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids. This system plays a crucial role in regulating functions like sleep, pain, responses from the immune system, and so on.

THC produces the psychotic effect when it gets into the body by affecting the endocannabinoid receptors of the brain, which in turn stimulates the brain’s reward system and produces pleasure chemicals such as dopamine.

CBD has little effect on ECS but instead activates or inhibits other compounds in the ECS. A good case in point is that CBD affects the absorption of anandamide (pain-regulating compound). The increase in levels of anandamide in the blood can lower the amount of pain a person experiences. CBD can also reduce inflammation in the brain and the nervous system, which is a great help to those with problems such as insomnia, pain, and immune system responses.

Benefits and uses of CBD

The use of CBD to treat various types of pains dates back thousands of years, but it was not until recently that the medical community began to study it again. Reliable sellers such as Berkshirecbd have also emerged to avail quality and trusted CBD oil for medicinal use.

Some benefits and uses of CBD include:

Treating multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is manifested by muscle spasms that can lead to constant pain in some people. It is an autoimmune ailment that affects the whole body through the brain and nerves. According to one report, short-term use of CBD oil may reduce how much spasticity one feels. Even if the results are modest, most of the people gave feedback on a reduction of symptoms. However, there is a need for more studies on humans to corroborate these results.

·   Treating arthritis pain

In a European Journal of Pain study to find out if CBD can help people with arthritis pain to manage it, a topical gel with CBD was applied for four days to rats with arthritis. The researchers observed that the rats had a significant reduction in inflammation and pain with no additional side-effects. Based on the study people with arthritis can get some relief from their pain by using CBD oil but more human studies on this use of CBD are necessary to confirm the results.

·   To manage chronic pain

In the same study in the European Journal of Pain, the researchers also studied the use of CBD in managing chronic pain. The research findings provided significant evidence that cannabis can be used as an effective treatment for chronic pain in adults.

·   Other uses

Other promising uses of cannabis include treating epilepsy and seizures, helping ex-smokers and drug addicts cope with withdrawal symptoms, and reducing anxiety, depression, and other mental disorders.

Side effects of CBD

Although the majority of people tolerate CBD well, some possible common side effects which could manifest include diarrhoea, tiredness, weight gain or loss, and changes in appetite. Furthermore, the use of CBD alongside other medications could render the medications more or less effective.

Final thoughts

CBD has shown promising results with managing various types of pain. One thing for certain is that there is a need for further research on the compound to find if it has other side effects or to verify its effectiveness. It is also crucial for those considering using CBD oil to seek the advice of their doctor.
