FORMIGAL, SPA (February 23rd, 2007) - Larisa Yurkiw (Owen Sound, ON) opened the FIS World Junior Alpine Ski Championships in Formigal, SPA today by finishing the Ladies super G as the top Canadian in 10th place.
Yurkiw, who won two Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships earlier this month, finished in a time of one minute 43.29 seconds.
Marie-Pier Préfontaine (St-Sauveur, QC) and Kelly McBroom (Canmore, AB) made it three Canadians in the Top 30, finishing 22nd and 25th respectively.
The opening race of the 2008 World Junior Championships was won by Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg in a time of 1:40.19 followed by Austrians Anna Fenninger in second and Stefanie Moser third.
Georgia Simmerling (West Vancouver, BC) crossed the finish line in 34th with Brittany Phelan (Mont Tremblant, QC) 46th while Stephanie Irwin (Calgary, AB) did not finish her run.
The championships are scheduled to continue tomorrow with downhill training for both men and ladies. The next race is a Men’s DH on February 26th.
