Number 8 seed Alisa Kleybanova was swept aside by American Christina McHale in straight sets 61-60 and was the first top seed to go out. No.6 seed Yanina Wickmayer, No.11 seed Peng Shuai and No.12 seed Julia Goerges were among the winners. Sania Mirza came through her first round only just by defeating Vania King in three sets.
