Quarterfinalists decided in African Volleyball Club champs
Nairobi, Kenya, With the 2011 Women’s African Club Championship already in full swing, all eight teams set to compete in the quarterfinals have now been decided as the fight for a place at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Club World Championships, set to take place later this year, continues in Nairobi, Kenya.
Pipelines of Kenya were the first to qualify on day two of the tournament, and they will now be joined by Ahly of Egypt, Prisons of Kenya, Jos South of Nigeria, Injs of Cameroon, Water Sport of Ethiopia, Bejaia of Algeria and Revenue Authority of Rwanda.
This means that Les As of Burundi, Kutlwano of Botswana, Jeshi Stars of Tanzania, KCB of Kenya, Naceria of Algeria, Efoulan of Cameroon and St Denis of Reunion will play in the 9-15 brackets.
After a rest on Monday the competition will resume on Tuesday.
Pool A Ahly of Egypt rebounded back after their first match loss against Pipeline of Kenya by overpowering Les As of Burundi 3-0 (25-5, 25-9, 25-7) in 52 minutes. The victory secured a second round ticket for the Egyptian team who has five titles under their belts as they finished second in the three team pool with a win- loss ratio of 1-1 behind the leaders of the pool Pipeline of Kenya who finished their pool matches yesterday.
Ahly used the experience of their players, especially wing spiker Sherihan Sameh and center Hager Badr, to overcome their opponent with the competition’s widest score.
Pool B Defending champions Prisons of Kenya continued their clean sheet in Pool B after they crushed Kutlwano of Botswana 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-18) in 59 minutes. The victory puts Prisons at the top of Pool B with an unblemished record while Kutlwano (1-2) finish in third position.
Winning setter Jane Wacu led her team with her artistry combinations to win the match easily against a less experienced side.
Jos South team of Nigeria secured the pool’s second ticket to the quarterfinals after they eased past Jeshi Sport of Tanzania 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-14) in a one side game overwhelmed by the eventual winners.
The side improve their record to 2-1 to finish second, while Jeshi Sport of Tanzania finished at the bottom of the pool (0-3).
Pool C Injs of Cameroon bounced back from one set down to sweep aside Naceria from Algeria in a fantastic five set match 3-2 (27-29, 25-20, 28-26, 14-25, 15-13) that lasted 128 minutes. The Algerians consistency saw them win the first set but T. Michelle led the Cameroonian side to draw 1-1 and lead narrowly at 2-1. Algerian attacker Lamya Hassassine served well to allow her team to pull level once again but Injs won the tiebreak narrowly 15-13.
Injis finish on top in Pool C with a perfect record while Naceria dropped to 0-3 to finish at the bottom of the pool.
Underdogs Water Sports from Ethiopia delivered one of the competitions biggest surprises when they hammered bronze medalists from last year Kenya’s KCB 3-1 (11-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-17) in 94 minutes. The Kenyan side looked sure to take the last quarters slot when they won the first set widely, but the Ethiopian girls had other ideas as they won three successive sets in style. They finished second (2-1) while KCB ended third to be eliminated for the first time in six years.
The victory in this decisive match secured a ticket for the Ethiopian team to reach the final eight for the first time in the history of volleyball in the east African country.
Pool D Bejaia of Algeria played at the top of their games to sweep Efoulan of Cameroon 3-1 (27-25, 29-27, 15-25, 25-18) in 111 minutes of emotional play. Bejaia improved their record to 2-1 to lead the pool on points ratio ahead of the Rwandan team Revenue Authority.
National team star Mouni Abdel Azim carried her team to a 2-0 before the Cameroonian club emerged in the third set with their wing spiker Rose Rebecca to decrease the deficit to 2-1. Bejaia regained their dominance however to win the third set and the match 3-1.
In a match lasting for 129 minutes Revenue Authority of Rwanda overcame the solid St Denis team of Reunion 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 23-25, 15-4). In an interesting match the Rwandan club came out firing and led 2-0 after controlling the opening two sets. But the Reunion side struggled through their powerful service to win two successive sets that extended the match to a tiebreak. The fifth set again saw the Rwandan team exude their dominance to win the set 15-4 and the match 3-2.
