Vonn adds 2008/09 Super-G Crystal Globe to collection
ÅRE, SWE Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) finished the ladies super-G season as the top Canadian as American Lindsey Vonn added to a growing medal collection at the FIS World Cup Finals in Åre, SWE.
Janyk, 15th in today’s final super-G of the season in one minute 22.56 seconds, ended up 17th in the discipline standings with 116 World Cup points.
“Since I didn’t do the downhill it gave me an opportunity this week to really get some good training in. I really wanted to finish on a good note,” said Janyk. “It’s could have been better but there was a lot of good things going on in the run.”
“It’s good to have the season wrapped up but also it’s time to reflect on how to make it better this summer so that the Britt that goes fast is there for next summer,” Janyk said.
“The struggle does bring the desire and the want to go back out there and find the speed. For sure I am hungry and will be ready to train and get better,” she added.
Emily Brydon (Fernie, BC), 16th in today’s race, completed the super-G season in 20th position in the overall standings. Kelly VanderBeek (Kitchener, ON) was 21st in the discipline standings after bringing her World Cup season to an end with a 19th place today.
Vonn won today’s World Cup Finals super-G capping a great season in the discipline. She finished first with 461 points, to earn the Crystal Globe in the ladies super-G for the first time in her career. Vonn has already secured the overall and downhill Crystal Globes on the ladies side. Italy’s Nadia Fanchini was 45 points back with Fabienne Suter of Switzerland third with 408 points.
Fanchini was second in today’s race, completing the Olympia course in Åre in 1:20.71. Germany’s Maria Riesch was third in 1:20.87.
The World Cup Finals continues with the ladies slalom and men’s giant slalom tomorrow. There are no Canadians qualified for the ladies slalom race.
