Utah surgeon repaired torn neck artery in skier Sarah Burke
Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke remained comatose in critical condition at Salt Lake City’s University Hospital on Thursday, the day after having surgery to fix a torn artery in her neck that caused bleeding in her brain following a fall Tuesday in the superpipe at the Park City Mountain Resort.
Hospital officials said Burke underwent successful surgery to repair a tear to a vertebral artery, which resulted in an intracranial hemorrhage — basically, a blood clot in her brain — at the time of her fall. William T. Couldwell, a professor and chairman of neurosurgery at the University of Utah performed the surgery, officials said in a statement.
