Shona Reubens repeats slalom success at Pontiac Games

Ontario’s Erin Mielzynski wins Pontiac GMC Cup overall title

LE RELAIS, QC (March 23rd, 2008) – Shona Rubens (Calgary, AB) continued a recent trend today at the Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships, becoming the latest Canadian alpine ski racer to defend a national championship title.

Rubens had the fastest time in both runs at today’s Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships Ladies slalom race at Le Relais, QC, finishing with a two-run combined time of one minute 44.25 seconds,

“It’s pretty exciting. There were a lot of good skiers here today so I was pretty nervous. I really wanted to defend my title and I’m really stoked that I was able to do it,” said Rubens, who is finding her form after spending most of the season rehabbing a left knee injury.

“It was definitely a big learning season for me but I feel like I am on the right track. Things are really positive right now and this is a great way to end the season,” Rubens said.

Rubens is the third ski racer to defend a Pontiac GMC Canadian Championship title in as many days, joining Paul Stutz (Banff, AB) and Erik Guay (Mont-Tremblant, QC) who retained their Men’s slalom and giant slalom titles respectively earlier in the week.

Eve Routhier (Sherbrooke, QC) claimed the silver medal followed by Megan Ryley (Toronto, ON) in third in today’s SL race.

In the Coupe Pontiac GMC Cup race series, Erin Mielzynski (Guelph, ON) finished seventh today, which was good enough to claim the Ladies overall title. Mielzynski, whose Coupe Nor-Am Cup results this season were good enough to qualify her for a World Cup spot n the super combined, finished the Pontiac Cup season with 517 points.

“It was kind of a surprise. I got the leader bib last night and it’s actually really nerve-wracking to know everyone is looking up to you when you go down the hill,” Mielzynski said. “I told myself to just go out and ski my best and see what happens.”

“It’s definitely motivating to me as I pursue my goal of eventually making the Canadian Alpine Ski Team and some day representing my country at the Olympics. I have been skiing really well lately and I definitely hope all of this momentum carries into next season,” she said.

Both overall winners received $5000 dollars in prize money from General Motors of Canada for their performance on the Pontiac GMC Cup series this season.

Geared towards the development of Canada's future champions, the Pontiac GMC Cup series featured 16 races in four provinces during the 2007/08 season.
