Raising Paralympic awareness and inspiring Paralympic dreams
August 23, 2007
In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sport competition in Stoke Mandeville, England involving World War II veterans with a spinal cord injury. Four years later, competitors from the Netherlands joined in and an international movement was born.
Today, approximately 40,000 athletes and fans have gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, for International Paralympic Day. The event, which is organized and hosted by the International Paralympic Committee, will showcase elite athletes and give the audience an up-close and interactive experience of top-level Paralympic Sport.
