SAALBACH, AUT Canada’s Kelly McBroom is recovering well and in good spirits after suffering a serious injury during a training run in Saalbach, AUT, on Monday.
McBroom (Canmore, AB) suffered a fractured left tibia and underwent emergency surgery within hours of the crash. She will have further treatment later this week before continuing her rehabilitation back in Canmore. The 21-year-old had only recently returned from injury after a long layoff.
“I hear that she’s already talking about coming back – about skiing again,” said Hugues Ansermoz, head coach of the ladies team.
“She’s never had an injury-free season and that was her big goal this year. She wasn’t able to achieve that but she really loves the sport. She has a great passion for it.”
McBroom made an emotional return at Lake Louise last month after recovering from a serious knee injury. She was in Austria ahead of this weekend’s races in Zauchensee, AUT. The new injury is not on the same leg she previously injured.
“She was airlifted from the course to a local hospital, where she had emergency surgery,” said Dr. Stephen French, medical co-director for Alpine Canada Alpin.
“Surgery went well and she requires a further procedure later this week. We’re looking forward to continuing her rehabilitation in Canada. It’s unlikely she will return to competition this season.”
