Lara Gut was the fastest lady in Zauchensee
ZAUCHENSEE, AUT-Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) showed she's still one of the best speed skiers in the world with a season-best 9th place finish in the World Cup super-G race in Zauchensee, AUT.
Janyk, who came out of the starting gate with bib number 2, crossed the finish line with a time of one minute, 14.26 seconds.
"It was a good race, I'm really happy," said Janyk. "I had an early bib today which can be good because the track is clean but that also means that you don't get a report so you really need to trust your inspection. I was really good in the tough turns so that helped me."
The last time Janyk was in the top 10 at a World Cup race was last January in Haus im Ennstal, AUT, when she finished 10th in the downhill event.
"It was a tight race and I'm definitely going in the right direction as I am now counting the hundredth of seconds and not the seconds between me and the leader," added Janyk.
This is only the second super-G race of the season as two past events were cancelled due to Mother Nature. The last time the ladies were on their super-G skis was in Lake Louise, AB, as Janyk finished in 33rd place.
"My confidence is getting back to where it should be and we made adjustments to my equipment right after Lake Louise so I feel better on my skis. We had good training in the past weeks and right now I just need to trust my skis, try to have fun and race hard," added Janyk.
Switzerland's Lara Gut dominated this super-G race by finishing first with a time of 1:12.82. Her last World Cup victory was in 2008 when she won the super-G race in St. Moritz, SUI.
Reigning World Cup overall champion Lindsey Vonn from the USA finished second with a time of 1:13.35. There was another Swiss lady on the podium today as Dominique Gisin finished third crossing the finish in 1:13.54.
The second fastest Canadian today was Marie-Michèle Gagnon (Lac-Etchemin, QC) who finished in 30th place with a time of 1:15.70. This is Gagnon's second time scoring FIS points for a World Cup super-G. Her first race was in Lake Louise and finished 27th. Only the top 30 score points.
The third and last Canadian to take the start today was Georgia Simmerling (West Vancouver, BC) who finished 35th.
The ladies technical team will be heading to Flachau, AUT for another night slalom event Tuesday.
