Shanghai (CHN) 10-12 December 2010
The 2010-11 ISU World Cup Short Track series resumed this weekend in Shanghai, for its second consecutive stop on Chinese soil, and with a total of 24 countries participating. The team from Korea dominated the medal count, winning a total of 14 medals. The next best performance was by China, who earned 7 medals. Canada earned 3 medals, while France and the Netherlands earned two medals each. The other countries to earn medals were: Italy (1) and Japan (1).
The first medals were handed out on Saturday afternoon after the 1500m event. This weekend, the skaters competed in that distance twice, while competing once in the 1000m, 1500m and Relay events. On the women’s side, the Koreans dominated the 1500m events, with the skaters taking five out of a possible six medals. The first 1500m Final was won by Shin-Young Yang, who finished ahead of team-mates Hyunsun Hwang (second) and Dam Min Kim (third). In the second 1500m Final, it was Ha-Ri Cho of Korea who took the win. Second place went to her teammate Seung-Hi Park, while Yang Zhou of China took third. Despite not competing this weekend, Katherine Reutter of the United States maintained the lead in the World Cup distance classification for the 1500m.
The women from China took the top spots on the podium in the 500m Finals, with Nannan Zhao taking the win, ahead of team-mate Qiuhong Liu. Jessica Gregg of Canada took third. The win in the first event was enough to allow Zhao to maintain her lead in the World Cup distance classification in the 500m.
In the ladies’ 1000m event, Korean skater Ha Ri Cho won ahead of two Chinese skaters – Yang Zhou (second) and Qiuhong Liu (third). With the second place finish, Zhou took the lead from Katherine Reutter (USA) in the World Cup classification for the distance.
In the men’s competition, Jinkyu Noh of Korea took the win, in front of Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands. Third place finish went to Ho-Suk Lee of Korea. Thibault Fauconnet’s fifth place was enough to maintain his lead in the World Cup classification for the distance.
The weekend’s competition concluded with the Relay events. The ladies 3000m Relay Final was won by China, with Korea a very close second. Third place finish went to the Italian team. The World Cup leaders for the relay events remain the same: China (ladies).
The ISU World Cup Short Track takes a break for the holiday season, and will resume in the New Year, on February 11-13, 2011 in Moscow, Russia.
