Germanys Rebensburg a surprise giant slalom champion

WHISTLER, BC (February 25, 2010) – Germany’s Viktoria Rebensberg has gone from World Junior champion to Olympic champion in less than a year.

Rebensberg, the 2009 FIS Alpine World Junior Ski Championships giant slalom and super-G champ, charged the second run of today’s delayed ladies Olympic GS to win the gold medal in a two-run combined time of two minutes 27.11 seconds.

Rebensberg, who turns 21 in just over a month, sat sixth after the opening run. Slovenia’s Tina Maze won the silver, her second medal of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, just 0.04s behind. First run leader Elisabeth Goergl of Austria ended up third in 2:27.25

Marie-Michèle Gagnon (Lac-Etchemin, QC) led four Canadians in the top 30, finishing in 2:28.89.

“I think it is positive. It was a good run but I wasn’t all that happy to not be in first after I came down,” said Gagnon, who followed the race by heading back up the hill for slalom training prior to tomorrow’s ladies Olympic slalom competition.

“I am going to ski with more risk tomorrow. If I want to achieve my objective I have to ski all out,” she said.

Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) was 25th with Shona Rubens (Canmore, AB) 28th and Marie-Pier Préfontaine (Saint-Sauveur, QC) 29th.

Today’s run was actually the completion of a GS that began yesterday. The second run had to be postponed by race officials due to fog.

Tomorrow’s schedule calls for the first run of the ladies Olympic slalom to begin at 10 a.m. PT. The second run is set for 1:30 p.m. PT.

The 2010 Olympic Winter Games conclude Saturday with the men’s slalom. First run begins at 10 a.m. followed by the second run at 1:45 p.m. PT.
