Cpast team captures three golds in Sestriere Super Combined

SESTRIERE, ITA Canada’s Para-alpine Ski Team had another great day on the slopes of Sestriere, IT.

Viviane Forest (Edmonton, AB), Kimberly Joines (Rossland, BC) and Lauren Woolstencroft (North Vancouver, BC) all won gold in the super-combined. Forest (Edmonton, AB) along with guide Arnaud Rajchenbach (Montreal, QC) who compete in the ladies visually impaired category also won a silver medal in the downhill behind Austria’s Sabine Gasteiger and her guide Emil Gasteiger.

“We had some difficulties with our distance in the downhill this morning, but we had a good race at the end. The course was fast and the snow was hard,” said Rajchenbach. “As for the slalom run, it was a really technical course. It was an interesting run for us as we make some progress in every run. Sabine is very fast and she has a lot of experience. If we find a good tempo, we can beat her.”

Joines, a sit skier, and Woolstencroft, a standing skier, also won golds in the downhill, repeating their respective performances on Wednesday.

In the women’s standing category Karolina Wisniewska (Vancouver, BC/ Calgary AB) stepped on the third step of the podium in the downhill race and finished fourth in the super combined. Arly Fogarty (Montreal, QC) finished ninth in both downhill and super combined races.

Thursday’s race consisted of a downhill run and a slalom run, both of them combined gave the super-combined results. The downhill and the super-combined results will count for the overall ranking at the end of the 2008/09 IPC World Cup season.

The IPC World Cup event continues tomorrow in Sestriere, ITA with a super-G.
