Goodman describes today’s first slalom run as personal best
LEVI, FIN (November 15, 2008) – Anna Goodman (Pointe Claire, QC) began the World Cup slalom season with the second best result of her career but left Levi, FIN not entirely satisfied, calling the race “a learning experience.”
Goodman, who finished 23rd today on the Levi Black piste in a two-run combined time on one minute 51.90s, said she was pleased with her performance in the season-opening slalom but not satisfied.
“My first run felt really good, there is no doubt that was my best run ever and to start the season that way feels really good,” said the 22-year-old Goodman who was 20th after one run.
“My second run I held back a little bit. I wasn’t aggressive enough. That’s definitely what I learned today. You can’t do that. You have to attack 100 per cent of the time,” Goodman said.
American Lindsay Vonn, the reigning ladies overall champion, won the opening World Cup slalom of the season in 1:47.98 to capture the first World Cup SL victory of her career. Maria Pietilae-Holmner of Sweden took second spot with Germany’s Maria Riesch third.
Two-time overall ladies slalom champion Marlies Schild did not race and is out for the season after sustaining a broken leg while training last month in Sölden, AUT.
Shona Rubens (Canmore, AB) and Brigitte Acton (Mont-Tremblant, QC), the two other Canadians in the race, did not qualify for today’s second run, finished the opening run 50th and 54th respectively.
Goodman and the rest of Canada’s Ladies technical team are now headed to Aspen, USA for slalom and giant slalom races Nov. 29 to Nov. 30. The men race a slalom in Levi tomorrow.
