COLLINGWOOD, ON (March 9th, 2008) – Anna Goodman (Pointe-Claire, QC) secured a World Cup slalom spot next season with her performance during today’s Northwest Mutual Funds Coupe Nor-Am Cup races in Collingwood, ON.
Goodman finished second in today’s final slalom of the Nor-Am Cup season, a result which was good enough to claim the overall Ladies slalom title.
The top two overall in each discipline on the Coupe Nor-Am Cup race series secure a World Cup spot in each specific discipline the following season. These are guaranteed World Cup quotas which are excluded from the regular team quotas, a clear advantage to the nation winning the spots.
Goodman finished today’s Ladies slalom race at Craigleith in a two-run combined time of one minute 31.03 seconds, 0.37s behind race winner Hailey Duke of the USA.
“I am really happy to have won the overall Nor-Am slalom title. There was a lot of nervousness in the air with the standings so tight. I didn’t want to screw up the second run and lose the title,” said Goodman.
“I would have definitely been happier to win today’s race. I put down a solid first run but the second run could have been better,” added the 22-year-old Goodman.
The victory gave Duke, who sat in sixth overall at the start of the race, enough points to finish second in the Ladies Nor-Am Cup slalom point standings. Goodman finished the season with 301 points in the slalom followed by Duke with 245.
The Collingwood area, where the races were held, wasn’t spared from the stormy weather Eastern Canada has been experiencing lately. Over 30 centimeters of snow fell in recent blizzard-like conditions, covering the race track with fresh snow. Race organizers and volunteers were commended for pulling together to clean and prepare the track as well as they did.
The Coupe Nor-Am Cup Finals, involving Men’s and Ladies super G, giant slalom and super combined races, take place in Whiteface, NY, USA from March 11th to March 16th.
