Colorado Springs, Colo. Sasha Cohen, the 2006 Olympic silver medalist, three-time World medalist and six-time U.S. medalist, announced today her intention to return to competitive figure skating. The return follows a three-year absence from competition for Cohen.
“This is a decision I have thought long and hard about for the last few months,” Cohen said. “I know this year will have its ups and downs, but I miss the challenge and am very excited to represent the United States in competition again.”
Cohen last competed at the 2006 World Figure Skating Championships, where she won the bronze.
“U.S. Figure Skating is pleased to welcome Sasha back to the world of competitive figure skating”, said David Raith, executive director of U.S. Figure Skating. “This is a great addition to what is already a very deep field of talent for the U.S. ladies.”
Cohen has stayed busy since her second-place finish at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy. She played herself in an episode of NBC’s “Las Vegas,” guest-judged an episode of Bravo’s “Project Runway” and had a part in the 2006 independent film Moondance Alexander.
“I’d like to thank everyone for their faith and support in me,” Cohen said. “"Yes, there are a lot of great skaters right now, but this is more of a personal thing for me. I miss the challenge and I miss that part of my life.”
U.S Figure Skating
U.S. Figure Skating is the national governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States as recognized by the United States Olympic Committee and the International Skating Union. U.S. Figure Skating is comprised of more than 763 member clubs and Basic Skills Programs representing approximately 179,000 members. U.S. Figure Skating is charged with the development of the sport on all levels within the United States including athletes, officials, sanctioning of events and exhibitions, and establishing the rules and guidelines by which the sport is governed.
