The hottest event on London’s sporting calendar returns to Earls Court on 13 November for a night of fast and furious roller derby
If you missed the London Rollergirls’ jam-packed season opener this month, there’s no excuse for not being trackside for Bout 2, on Saturday 13 November. This season fans can enjoy two roller derby bouts for their ticket price, and watch all four of the league’s teams battle it out on the track.
October’s season opener saw some of the London Rollergirls’ newest recruits make their bout debut, but this time around they’ll be proving themselves as forces to be reckoned with. The evening’s first bout sees a rematch of last season’s champions Suffra Jets and runners-up Ultraviolent Femmes, who are now more equal than ever due to line-up changes during the summer break. The second bout will be one to watch, with the Steam Rollers and new league team the Harbour Grudges fresh from wins in the season opener. If our calculations are correct, it’s going to be a close one.
What is roller derby, you ask? It’s one of the fastest-growing sports for women in the UK and around the world, involving speed, strength, strategy and pure athleticism on rollerskates. The release of Drew Barrymore's directorial debut Whip It! earlier this year propelled roller derby into the mainstream, and made it one of the biggest sports of 2010.
The league’s new home ground at Earls Court includes merchandise stalls, charity raffles, London Rollergirls DJs, commentators who’ll explain the game plays and rules for first-time spectators, and a rocking after party at a venue close to Earls Court.
London Rollergirls’ bouts attract sell-out crowds, so buy your tickets early to secure your spot at Earls Court. If you’re brave enough to sit trackside you might be lucky enough for a real live rollergirl to land in your lap… But remember – that’s a privilege and not a right!
