Womens Golf-La Manga Challenge double for Kent pair
Kent golfers Carole Mathieson and Claire Green completed a team double when they paired up to win the final event of the English Women’s Golf La Manga Club Challenge in Spain.
The pair, from Redlibbets Golf Club, scored an impressive 42 points over the North course in the betterball stableford – to claim their second success of the week and each win a pair of Footjoy shoes. They were three points ahead of runners-up Pam Tattersall and Sara Meehan of Henlle Park, Shropshire.
Earlier in the week, Claire and Carole were part of the winning team at the first event of the Challenge, alongside their travelling companions and fellow club members, Kam Cheema and Linda Berriman.
“We are absolutely chuffed,” said Claire. “We came for a nice holiday, and I can’t believe we have picked up some prizes.”
Both players contributed to the card with Carole hitting top form with play which included three birdies. She was delighted with her golf because she has been hampered recently by an ankle injury.
“Last time I played I could only do four holes and I am so pleased I have managed to get four rounds in,” said Carole, who used an ankle support and a buggy.
“We have had a great week. We came here to have a good time, to play golf and enjoy each other’s company. Everything else is a bonus.”
The La Manga Club is EWGA’s official overseas partner and The La Manga Club Challenge was EWGA’s first overseas event.
It ended with a gala dinner and the whole event hailed as a huge success by the players, who enjoyed four rounds of competition in the Spanish sunshine. Leicestershire’s Carol Duncumb, who won the individual tournament, said: “I can’t think of any lady here who is not going to come again. We will certainly go back and tell everyone about it.”
Carol, who is a member at Rothley Park, also felt The Challenge would help to inform club golfers about the work of the English Women’s Golf Association. “We need to keep the momentum of this going because it will bring EWGA to the attention of golfers generally.”
