England moved up the leaderboard today in the women’s World Amateur Team Championship in Argentina, thanks to sub-par scores by Hannah Burke and Kelly Tidy.
Both players returned one-under par 71 at Buenos Aires Golf Club and moved the team up to share 21st place on the leaderboard, with a 36-hole team score of five-over par.
It was an advance of 12 places but, after the first day’s disappointing team score of seven-over par, they’re still playing catch-up.
The lead is held by Korea who, on a day of perfect scoring conditions, shot a superb 16-under par. They’re 15-under for 36 holes and one stroke ahead of the USA. Germany are in third place on 11 under.
England intend to keep advancing up the leaderboard. National coach Steve Robinson commented: “The girls had a good go today. We certainly improved on the first day’s performance and we’ve just got to keep going as far up the leaderboard as we can.
“They all worked very hard and they are still working hard. They came off the course, had their lunch and went straight on to the putting green before going on to the range. They are still chirpy and the team spirit is good.”
At one point during the round England appeared to be heading for a low score, with Kelly and Hannah reaching seven-under between them.
Kelly, the British champion from Royal Birkdale, got to four under before slipping back with a triple bogey on 12, where she went for the pin, but found water. Solid play from Hannah (Mid-Herts) took her to three-under par after 12 holes, but she bogeyed 13 and 15.
The third member of the team, Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa), struck the ball beautifully but couldn’t buy a putt and her score of 76 was discounted.
Ireland are tied 13th on one-under par, Scotland are 8th on six-over and Wales are tied 29th on eight-over.
