Women's pentathlon final line up in Rio

It was business as usual for Olympic Champion Laura Asadauskaite with the Lithuanian winning-machine showing she had lost none of her hunger as she powered past a strong field to claim top spot in the Women’s Qualification Group ‘A’.

The 29-year-old came second in the fencing and placed tenth in the swim so started ahead of her rivals in the combined event. Near flawless shooting saw her cross the finish line well ahead of the pack to record the sixth best time. She now goes into Final day as one of the favourites.

It was also a good day for Canada’s Melanie McCann who finished just behind Asadauskaite. Her coach will now have high hopes that in the Final she will be able to beat her previous best at a World Cup Series, when she placed sixth in China two years ago.

Fledgling Mexican star Tamara Vega, 20, was the model of consistency, finishing eighth in the fence and seventh in both the swim and combined event to place third overall in Group ‘A’. In this form, could she upset the current order?

Adele Stern was the fastest around the course to finish fourteenth after the three events, booking her place in the Final alongside her teammates Elodie Clouvel, Elfie Arnaud and Paola Bartoli to make it a solid day for the French.
