When will the FA Women’s Super League return?

Men’s top-flight football returned in June across England after going on hiatus in March. While the men were able to restart the campaign and finish it out in late July, the FA Women’s Super League was absent with the season ended at its stage of hiatus. Now, after months of uncertainty around the FA Women’s Super League, it has been announced that the 2020-21 campaign will kick off on September 5. Women’s football fans are anticipating the FA Women’s Super League’s return and can get sport betting sign up offers ahead of the new season’s kick off.

Clubs have returned to training and are gearing up for the season ahead. There are still a lot of questions around the upcoming campaign as a three-stage plan has been implement to bring back the women’s side of football in England. The plan is the same one employed for the men and should see the FA Women’s Super League return without an issue.

How did last the 2019-20 season end?

The 2019-20 FA Women’s Super League went on hiatus in March and was officially ended in May. The league used a points per game method to determine the final standings in the table. Chelsea were awarded the league title in spite of finishing one point lower than Manchester City. The points per game method handed them the title, however. The Blues had played one fewer game than Manchester City. The Cityzens did qualify for the Champions League and along with Chelsea, will be the league’s only representative in the tournament.

At the opposite end of the table were Liverpool. While the men’s team won the Premier League, the women’s team secured a mere six points from 14 games. They finished one point off of Birmingham City and were relegated to the FA Women’s Championship.

The 2019-20 season will not only be remembered for the COVID-19 pandemic, but for the growth of the women’s game. Coming off of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, FA Women’s Super League clubs experienced a first. That first was playing matches at the stadiums more commonly associated with the men’s teams. Liverpool ladies played against Everton at Anfield while Manchester City and Manchester United locked horns at the Etihad Stadium.

How will the 2020-21 season look?

Liverpool’s relegation sees them replaced by Aston Villa for 2020-21. The Villains won the Women’s Championship and now will work to retain their top-flight status. The FA Women’s Super League will offer a new incentive to teams as the top three finishers now qualify for the Champions League. Another addition to the league this term is a second relegation place. Two clubs will be relegated to the Women’s Championship rather than one.

The Women’s Super League was hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and by the time it restarts will have had six months off. Premier League CEO Richard Masters oversaw the men’s top flight gifting around £1 million to the women’s league to help it restart. The funds will help women’s division with COVID-19 tests and other aspects of the restart.
