Volleyball, Beach Volleyball remain on Olympic program

Beach Volleyball will be part of the Olympics for the fifth time in London 2012
Lausanne, 2009 — The FIVB today applauded the International Olympic Committee’s decision to once again accept Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, under the authority and governance of the FIVB, as Olympic disciplines for another Olympic cycle.

Two of the most popular summer Olympic sports, Volleyball and Beach Volleyball will be part of the 26 sports represented at the 2012 Games in London.

Volleyball made its debut at the Olympics in 1964 in Tokyo. Beach Volleyball followed in 1996 at the Atlanta Games.

The IOC voted on the inclusion of the 26 sports at its Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark. The IOC members also voted to include golf and rugby sevens in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, bringing the number of sports at the Games back to 28 after baseball and softball were dropped from the 2012 Olympic program.
