As the last gymnast of the competition, BILES tumbled and pranced to a score of 15.375 points, pushing USA to a team total 179.280 points. They easily defended their 2011 title, earning the top team scores on three of the four apparatus in the process.
USA's dominance in the final was such that, although BILES and Kyla ROSS (USA) landed skills off-kilter on Balance Beam in the third rotation, the mistakes made no impact on the final outcome.
China won silver with 172.587 points, and defending silver medallist Russia won bronze with 171.462 points.
China rallied after a mediocre performance on Uneven Bars in the second rotation where SHANG Chunsong (CHN) over-arched a handstand and then came off the apparatus, and YAO Jinnan (CHN) fell on an aerial skill. They leapt into second place with the best team score of the final on Balance Beam in the third rotation, and held on to finish second.
Russia's hopes seemed to fade early when Ekaterina KRAMARENKO (RUS) fell on Balance Beam and Alla SOSNITSKAYA (RUS) fell to her hands on Floor Exercise. They pulled from fifth to third place on Vault in the last rotation, however, owing to assertive performances by veterans Tatiana NABIEVA (RUS) and Aliya MUSTAFINA (RUS). SOSNITSKAYA, the last vaulter, lost control of her landing but earned a high enough score to keep Russia third.
Romania, who led Russia heading in the last rotation, lost momentum when Alina STANILA (ROU), their second gymnast on Balance Beam, fell on a tumbling combination. Larisa Andreea IORDACHE (ROU), their last performer, made a gallant attempt to secure bronze for her team, but her impressive score of 15.500 on Balance Beam was nonetheless too little, too late. Romania placed fourth with 170.963 points.
Following Romania in order were Italy (169.023), Great Britain (168.495), Australia (165.988) and Japan (165.422).
