US and Japan smash opponents in Women's Football

(BEIJING, August 12) -- Four group matches took place today at the Beijing Olympic Women’s football tournament.


Sweden defeated Canada 2-1 in a group E match, with Swedish striker Lotta Schelin scoring twice in the 19th and 51st minutes.


Melissa Tancredi‘s goal in the 63rd minute helped Canada make an impression on the scoreboard, but both teams failed to score for the rest of the match.

 

In the other group E match, host China defeated Argentina 2-0. Argentine midfielder Maria Quinones's own goal gave China a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute. Gu Yasha’s goal in the 90th minute sealed China’s victory.

In a group G match, Japan beat Norway 5-1. Norway's substitute striker Guro Knutsen's goal in the 27th minute gave Norway a 1-0 lead against Japan. Japan equalized four minutes later when Kinga Yukari scored.



Gunhild Folstad’s own goal in the 51st minute gave Japan a 2-1 lead. Japan consolidated its lead and won the match thanks to goals by Ohno Shinobu, Sawa Homare and Hara Ayumi.

In the other group G match, the United States wiped out New Zealand 4-0. The goals were scored by Heather O’Reilly, Amy Rodriguez, Lindsay Tarpley and Angela Hucles.
