VIERUMAKI, Finland -- Molly Schaus (Natick, Mass.) made 29 saves to help lead the U.S. Women's National Team to a 2-0 victory over Sweden in its fifth game of the International Ice Hockey Federation Twelve Nations Invitational Tournament Series. With the win, the U.S. improved to 5-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in the tournament.
"I'm really proud of the way that our team battled today," said Katey Stone, head coach of the 2011-12 U.S. Women's National Team. "It was a hard-fought win, and they found a way to get the job done."
After a scoreless first period, Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) struck for her fourth power-play goal and eighth tally of the tournament at 3:33 of the second period. Monique Lamoureux-Kolls (Grand Forks, N.D.) scored 10 minutes later to extend the U.S. lead to two goals.
The U.S. held its 2-0 lead through the third period, as Schaus made 17 saves in the final frame to seal the victory and collect her third shutout of the tournament. Overall, Team USA outshot Sweden, 51-29, in the game.
The U.S. Women's National Team will next play Finland tomorrow (Aug. 31) at 11 a.m. EDT in its final game of the event here at Vierumäki Arena.
NOTES: Kacey Bellamy was named the U.S. Player of the Game ... Kelli Stack leads the team in scoring with 10 points (4-6) through five games ...
