TUR - Newcomers Kayseri complete a Turkish trio for Final Eight

Newcomers Kayseri Kaski spor have secured a magical maiden trip to the EuroLeague Women Final Eight and will now join fellow Turkish clubs Fenerbahce and Galatasaray odeabank in Ekaterinburg next month.

The celebrations lasted long into the night as Kayseri won a dramatic and absorbing series decider 63-61 against Italian side Beretta Famila Schio to book their place.

Even if they will be an underdog when the action gets underway in Russia, head coach Ayhan Avci is determined his team will continue making a major splash in what has been an outstanding rookie campaign in the competition.

"Congratulations to my team, my players and to my city,” he said.

"It's not over for us - it has only just started.

"We will work hard and we will show our power."

Extending their fine home record to a superb six straight victories, it was again Lara Sanders who headlined after claiming a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Crucially, she also hauled down the play of the game with a priceless offensive rebound with eight seconds remaining.

Tanisha Wright posted a nice cameo for the triumphant home side and added: "We didn't play well, but winning is winning and we will work hard at the Final Eight."

Another club heading to the showpiece event for the first time are ZVVZ USK Prague, after they locked down Rivas Ecopolis to complete a 54-38 win in the Czech capital.

It was Kia Vaughn who excelled at just the right time for her club, pouring in 18 points after barely missing a shot and completing a fine night of work with 11 boards.

"This game was the most important of the season," reflected the center after the final buzzer.

Prague play-caller Natalia Hejkova was particularly delighted with the way her team shut down their opponents and the night was made extra special because of her previous history treading the boards with Prague.

"This time the Final Eight will be very important for me as I am going there with a team I played for," said Hejkova.

"We played great defense."

The last remaining berth was filled by Tango Bourges, who beat fellow 2013 Semi-Finalists, Good Angels Kosice 67-57 off the back of 10 points and 10 assists from their on-floor leader, Celine Dumerc.

Leading by as many as 18 points late in the third quarter, the French champions were almost upset by the legendary Slovak Republic star, Zuzana Zirkova who almost led an unlikely and spectacular revival with 14 points in an explosive five-minute spell.

But, much to the relief of the home fans and their head coach, Bourges eased away again down the game stretch.

"I am proud of my team and we need to appreciate this moment,” said Valerie Garnier.

"We won the right to live a great adventure at the Final Eight like last year.

"My team demonstrated a great behaviour and we kept control over ourselves and Kosice.

"We played a fantastic game on defense and rebounding in particular."

Meanwhile, Greek forward Stella Kaltsidou had more reason than most to be thrilled with the result, having sustained an ACL injury on the eve of the tournament last year which forced her to miss out.

"It was a tough fight and a very physical game," she stated after scoring a season-high 18 points.

"We succeeded in keeping control of our emotions and we stayed focused on the game, so we are very happy."

With the line-up for Final Eight complete and including three clubs from Turkey and also a trio of Russian representatives, the subsequent seeding which has determined the round-robin groups at the event has thrown up some fascinating match-ups.

All of the Turkish teams have all been pitched into Group A, along with former four-time champions, Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje.

Joining the hosts and defending champions UMMC Ekaterinburg in Group B are Tango Bourges and Final Eight first-timers, ZVVZ USK Prague who will join another new entrant in Nadezhda Orenburg, who have offered to take a number of fans to the event for free to celebrate booking their spot.

The EuroLeague Women Final Eight tips off on Monday 7 April, with the two best teams from each group advancing to the Semi-Finals on 11 April and the all-important title game being held on Sunday 13 April.
