The top two seeds from the women’s singles have fallen in the round of 16 at the BCiB Queensland Open today.
Former Australian Open champion Katrina Wright, ranked third in the nation, and Mosman Park’s Therese Hastings, ranked sixth, were beaten by Maree Gibbs and Jan Rolph in tie-breakers respectively to leave the draw wide open.
With many expecting Wright and Hastings to clash for the winners’ cheque on Friday, a spanner was thrown in the works when the pair failed to make the quarter-finals.
As a result, selecting a women’s champion is anyone’s guess, with some experienced heads due to pit their skills against some raw talent.
Forcing their way into the quarter-finals were the super-reliable Betty Herbertson, Marilyn Peddell and Karen Goldsworthy, while teenage sensations Carly Griffiths and Natasha Van Eldik remain in contention for one of the nation’s biggest titles.
The remaining quarter-finalist is Invermay’s Bec Quail, an Australian under-25 representative, who will now assume favourtism after blasting her way into the final eight with a 15-3, 13-0 victory over Jackie Barber.
