Three British Lifters Picked for Youth World Championships

TALENTED young British weightlifters Alex Collier, Sonny Webster and Zoe Smith have been selected to compete at the World Youth Championships in Peru next month.

The three teenaged athletes will travel to Lima with Head Coach Tamas Feher for the event from May 8-15, where
they will come up against possibly their toughest opposition yet.

They have all shown marked improvement over the last few months to earn their places in the event.

Webster, who is from Devon and trains at the Empire Club in Bristol, won silver at the Commonwealth Youth Championships in December last year, and was best of the Under-17s in the Tri-Nations Tournament in Norway earlier this year, where he totalled 250kg with 110kg in
the snatch and 140kg in the clean
and jerk.

Webster totalled 259kg in the English
Championships (77kg class), and will be aiming to better both those performances in the World Championships. Collier, a member of Team Manchester, is the current British Schoolboy Champion.
And at the English Championships in February he was the youngest of the lifters in the 69kg category, but still
managed to take second spot with a 223kg total.

Collier finished second behind Webster in the Tri Nations, just 13 points behind his GB team-mate on the Sinclair scale, which factors in an athlete’s bodyweight.

And 16-year-old Londoner Smith, who recently put her A-level studies on hold to focus on her training for the Olympics
next year, will be looking to replicate the form she showed in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi where she won Bronze.
