The Olympic Games about to open

Beijing, China, August 8 — The Australian water polo team fine-tuned their training at outside venues today in preparation for the start of 2008 Olympic Games competition.

Both teams had training away from the spotlight of the main competition pool, Yingdong Natatorium, as it was closed because of the close proximity to the National Stadium where the Opening Ceremony will be staged tonight.

The Aussie Sharks are expected to play a training game at Yingdong at 5pm tomorrow against possibly Germany before clashing with Greece in the tournament opener the following afternoon.

Aussies on the scene include Debbie Watson and Sharan Wheelock who have roles with broadcasting. Debbie will be a co-commentator for Channel 7 and Sharan is spotting for the host broadcaster, BOB, from a privileged position behind the scorebench. Both were members of the 1995 Sydney FINA World Cup-winning team.

AWPI Secretary General John Whitehouse is ensconced in his position as Honorary Secretary of the FINA Technical Water Polo Committee.

AWPI Media Manager Russell McKinnon is working at Yingdong as the Sport Information Specialist for water polo's Olympic News Service team.

Make sure to check out the SBS schedule for games on television and drop in on www.nbc.com for three games being streamed daily, including the USA match.
