The 2007/2008 Season EHF Champions League: 32 clubs from 26 nations EHF Cup: 39 clubs from 32 nations Challenge Cup: 39 clubs from 23 nations Cup Winners’ Cup: 29 clubs from 28 nations A total of 366 matches were played in the four competitions and 397 900 spectators followed the action live in the arenas around Europe. This was an increase from 385.200 in 2006/2007. The number of goals totalled 20.044, which increased from last season’s 17.219!
Women’s EHF Champions League CONGRATULATIONS Zvezda Zvenigorod! Zvezda Zvenigorod is the first Russian women’s club to take the EHF Champions League title! Zvezda won both matches. They beat four times EHF Champions League winner Hypo Niederösterreich in both legs of the finals.
The Top Scorer prize was clearly taken by Timea Toth from Hypo Niederösterreich with 127 goals throughout the 2007/2008 season.
Women’s Challenge Cup CONGRATULATIONS Vfl Oldenburg! European Cup newcomers, Vfl Odenburg, took the Challenge Cup title, beating the French club Merignac Handball convincingly in both legs, with a final score of 51:60. They lifted the Cup in front of 2500 fans in their home arena.
Women’s EHF Cup CONGRATULATIONS Dinamo Volgograd! The European Cup old timer club Dinamo Volgograd has taken their first title. The club has been part of the EHF European Cup competitions since 1997/1998, despite reaching the higher ranks of the competitions on numerous occasions this is their first European title. They beat the Spanish club Itxako-Navarra. The final result was 50:45!
Women’s Cup Winners’ Cup Final CONGRATULATIONS Larvik HK! Larvik HK of Norway has taken the 2007/2008 Women’s Cup Winners’ Cup beating the Romanian team of CS Rulmentul-Urban Brasov in both final matches. Larvik entered the competition in the EHF Champions League and were third in the group matches which automatically qualified them for the Cup Winners’ Cup. They are no strangers to the Cup Winners’ Cup, they won it back in 2004/2005!
Conclusion The 2007/2008 has now ended with final round-up work coming to a close. Thoughts are already on the 2008/2009 season with national federations announcing their national league results, which can be viewed on www.eurohandball.com. The newly formed EHF Women’s Club Committee and Board will meet for the first time on 9/10 June 2008, with the forthcoming season being one of the points on the agenda for the meetings. The deadline for all club registrations for participation in the 2008/2009 season is 22 June 2008 and the 2008/2009 competition line-ups will be published by 14th July 2008. The EHF will publish news on the new season throughout the summer.
