Students win inter-area competition

In the wonderful setting of Manchester's National Cycling Stadium, 10 Korfballing areas battled it out to win the Inter Area 2008 title.

With teams travelling from as far away as South West and Scotland, this was truly a National event with players from almost every corner of the country. Of the 11 Area Associations, 7 were represented, 2 declined the original invite and 2 were unable to field teams on the day.

The 10 teams were split into 2 pools of 5, the top 2 teams from each pool going into semi-finals, followed by the grand final.

In the pool matches there were some close matches and some surprise results. Only the British Student team won all their matches, all other teams lost at least one match, making for an exciting set of games.

British Students topped their pool with the maximum 8 points. West Midlands and London drew in 2nd place on 4 points, but as West Midlands beat London in the pool match, it was them who went through.

In the other pool Cambs and East Midlands both finished on 6 points, but with Cambs winning the head to head match, it was them who went through in 1st place, and East Midlands in 2nd.

The semi-finals saw Cambs dispatch with West Midlands, to secure their place in the final, and British Students overcome the East Midlands team.

So for the first time in the history of the event, Cambs and British Students took their place in the final, secure in the knowledge that whoever won, would be winning for the first time. It was the last match of a tiring day, but the players stepped up their game. There had to be only one winner though, and that was the British Student team, who had looked strong throughout the day, who pulled through. The final score: 11-2 to them.
