St Helens Girls Rugby League club have been rewarded for their fantastic season by being named the Merseyside club of the year at an awards ceremony which took place on Friday.
Coaches and volunteers from the club had been invited to the Britannia Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool to receive their nominee award for St Helens Sports District Club of the Year and were both astonished and delighted to receive the overall award for the region.
Geoff Allford, Head Coach, received the award on behalf of the club. He said: “It is incredible that our Girls Section has received this award.
“We were astounded to have won Club of the Year in St Helens, so the thought of becoming overall winners wasn’t even conceivable, especially when we found that only one other club from St Helens had won the award previously.
“The girls work really hard every week and have a lot of fun doing it. The Section is moving from strength to strength and we hope to continue this throughout next season, we won’t be resting on our laurels and will be looking at ways to continue to improve the experience for the girls.”
The night was hosted by Olympic and Commonwealth Gymnast, Craig Heap and a range of guest speakers also attended such as Olympians Rachel Brown and Lucy Martin and Paralympic stars Marc Powell and Roy Turnham.
RFL Director of Participation, David Gent said: “On behalf of the RFL I’m pleased to congratulate St Helens Girls on this fantastic achievement which follows on from them being named St Helens club of the year.
“The club continues to go from strength to strength and sets a great example of best practice for other clubs; we look forward to seeing them continue to progress in the future.”
