Basketball South Africa has named a strong team to represent the country in Harare during the African Championships this weekend.
Included in the team is Emmerentia Ledwaba, who is back in the country after spending five years in the United States of America.
The team is Njokweni Nosipho, Modiselle Tuki Elizabeth, Samuels Veranique Ta’meel, Mokhathi Seipati Anna, Moutlwatse Ellen, Molema Requelh Nkekolo, Mosehlana Phuti, Khoabane Itumeleng, Ledwaba Emmerentia, Mtsweni Lungile Blessed, Mfamadi Takalani and Sathula Pumla.
Led by Malumbete Ralethe as head of delegation, the team will play against Zimbabwe on Saturday and Sunday in the African Championships qualifiers.
“It is a two legged qualifier, the team has been training hard and we are looking forward to doing well,” said Ralethe.
“This is a new challenge for the newly elected executive of Basketball South Africa as we have not been participating in international competitions due to previous international squabbles.”
The overall winners of this clash will qualify for this biennial continental championships in Antananarivo, Madagascar, in September.
Angola, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, Nigeria, DR Congo and Senegal have been dominating basketball in Africa in both the women’s and men’s categories.
Brenda Mtungutungu, a former player of the team, has been roped into the technical committee. Mtungutungu has also captained various national teams.
Malesela “Gogga” Maleka, Basketball South Africa said: “We have been able to lay a solid foundation for our national teams to return to the international arena.
“One of the things we are working on is to revive the club leagues in all the provinces so that our brothers and sisters can play basketball on a regular basis.”
