Silver for Zoe Smith at Youth World Weightlifting Championships

COMMONWEALTH Games silver medallist Zoe Smith secured silver again, this time in the Youth World Championships in Peru on Friday morning.

Smith, 16 and from London, broke the Commonwealth record for both the snatch (91kg) and the total (201kg), while she equalled the clean and jerk record (110kg).

"I'm really pleased with my performance," said Smith afterwards. "It was a great feeling to get silver and to place above a great nation like China [in third].

"I got a personal best in the snatch and equalled it in the clean and jerk, but I know I can do better."

"My next major comp is the European Youth Championships in Poland in August so I can't wait to get back in the gym and make some more improvements."

Meanwhile, GB Head Coach Tamas Feher added: "It was a very touching moment to see Zoe perform so well. As coach it's up to me to make sure we use the right tactics and then up to the athlete to execute and Zoe executed very well.

"We expected that Zoe would get a medal but we didn't know which one. The Russian girl seemed unbeatable because we knew her results in previous competition but the other places were open.

"I'm very proud of Zoe because we beat the Thai and Chinese girls and these are two leading countries in women's weightlifting.

"For the senior world championships Zoe will be great and surprise everyone even more."
