Women’s UK Dodgeball Championship starts on 8th May 2010. The early rounds will take place at Nottingham University, with the Semi-finals and Final taking place on 5th June at Hertfordshire Sports Village, during the UK Championships.
There are only a few women’s Dodgeball teams, mainly representing their university Dodgeball clubs. The UK Dodge Ball Association expects 8 or 9 teams to enter the national women’s championships, most of which will have limited experience as the sport is just beginning to attract female teams. Reigning champions are Leeds Met Carnegie Women, but their title will be under threat from Bio-Hazard Dodgettes, a team based in Milton Keynes comprising of ex-university players. Bio-Hazard are captained by Anna Heaton, who holds the record for the UK’s fastest women’s Dodgeball throw, at 46 m.p.h.
UKDBA Tournament Coordinator, Nick Pinnock said, ’The women’s game is wide open at this point. There are three strong teams who have been playing for over a year and five or six teams of mainly new players. If any female team from another sport wants to enter, they will be able to compete on an equal footing with most others in the tournament, as long as they have a handful of training sessions to prepare. Players from cricket, rugby, netball, basketball and handball usually adapt well to Dodgeball, as it is a ball in hand sport and they can transfer their catching and throwing skills quite quickly. New teams just need to learn the rules and some basic tactics.’
