Round 2 of the Drug Aware Women’s Pro saw Bruna Schmitz (Brazil), Jacqueline Silva (Brazil) and Australians Serena Brooke and Rebecca Woods all eliminated.
Highlighting the emerging young women surfers was Lee Ann Curran (France) who won today’s opening heat and was responsible for Rebecca Woods’ early exit from the event.
With a modest heat tally on her top two scoring rides of 10.87 to Woods on only 7.16, Curren is focused on elite ASP World Tour qualification this year.
"Very relieved to get through that heat," Curren said. "Rebecca is a great competitor and always hard to beat but conditions were tricky out there today and I think I got the best of wave ion which made all the difference.”
Lee Ann is the daughter of former three-time ASP World Champion Tom Curren. Hawaii’s Coco Ho, Argentina’s Claudia Goncalves and Australia’s Angela Keighran were other younger emerging surfers to progress through to the final 24 surfers of the women’s division and with larger surf predicted in the coming days, Round 3 through to finals looks certain to be decided in excellent conditions.
