Schippers shows a Dutch of class to land 200m gold on epic night in Zurich

Schippers shows a Dutch of class to land 200m gold on epic night in Zurich

Dafne Schippers produced a second sensational run of the week to match the feats of Fanny Blankers-Koen 64 years earlier and land the sprint double at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich on Friday night.

After her brilliant 100m triumph on Wednesday, Schippers won the 200m in 22.03, a national record and the fastest time by a European since 1995 to demonstrate how right she was to opt out of the heptathlon for these individual events.

No Dutch athlete will ever replace the legend that is Blankers-Koen but Schippers is making quite a name for herself.

She is some star. Tall and with such power, no wonder she is such a brilliant multi-eventer.

Now she is arguably the most talked about woman athlete in the world after stretching away to win as the field soared around the bend to beat Great Britain's Jodie Williams, who ran a superb personal best for silver in 22.46, with Myriam Soumare, of France, third in 22.58.

Schippers said: "The world leading mark is unbelievable and a time of 22.03 is something I did not dream of.

"Two gold medals feels good and they are a great success for me and my country. How did I find myself as a sprinter? We were at a training camp and my coach saw that I was pretty fast."
