Following an extensive three stage interview process involving a wide range of candidates chosen from over 60 initial applicants, England Hockey is delighted to announce that Sally Munday, currently the National Governing Body’s Development Director, has accepted an offer to become England Hockey’s Chief Executive and will formally begin her role on 5th January 2009.
Earlier this year, the England Hockey Board proposed changes to the executive leadership structure of the organisation; these changes were approved at a General Meeting in April 2008. It was agreed to split the existing Executive Chairman’s role, which has been held by Philip Kimberley since 2003, into a Non-Executive Chairman and a full time Chief Executive. This structure will strengthen the organisation in the run up to 2012.
Sally has been with hockey since 1998 after early career spells with Reading Borough Council and the Lawn Tennis Association. Her initial role in the sport was as a Regional Development Manager in the south region.
Following the formation of England Hockey in early 2003, she was appointed as Development Director later that year and, as part of the executive team, has worked very successfully since then with the Board as England Hockey’s reputation has been rebuilt with all its stakeholders; she has also led the work on the introduction of the sport’s Single System. She currently manages half of the organisation’s 65 staff.

Sally has also had significant performance experience having managed England women’s teams from under 16 through to the seniors over many years. Her knowledge of the sport is thus extensive.
Sally said “I am absolutely delighted to have been given this new challenge particularly in the context of all the opportunities our sport has ahead with the London 2012 Olympics.”
Philip Kimberley, who has been Executive Chairman since May 2003, said “I am really pleased that Sally came through the interview process so strongly and know she will do an excellent job as she has outstanding leadership and managerial skills; I look forward to working closely with her in this particularly exciting time for all Olympic sports”.
Sally will formally take up her position on January 5th 2009 reporting to Philip, allowing time for a thorough handover of executive responsibilities in the coming months, and recruitment of Sally’s successor.
Philip will then move into the Non-Executive Chairman’s position as planned.
