Rolex First-Time Winner Tseng wins in playoff at McDonald's LPGA Championship
HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., June 8, 2008 – Yani Tseng defeated Maria Hjorth in a four-hole, sudden death playoff to became the first Taiwanese player to win an LPGA major championship on Sunday. The 19-year-old won the McDonald's LPGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola with a four-round tally of 12-under-par 276 (73-70-65-68). The win also catapults her to the top of the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year race.
“I feel very excited,” Tseng said after accepting the $300,000 first-place check. “I couldn't believe it, I just won a major.”
Tseng was steady all day playing alongside Rolex Rankings' number one Lorena Ochoa, making five birdies and just one bogey in regulation. It took four holes in the playoff, but Tseng eventually rolled in a five-foot birdie putt to take home the season's second major at Bulle Rock Golf Course.
