There were only two fixtures in this week’s round of matches but the strong performances kept on coming after last weekends excellent beginning to the new season.
An early kick off saw Hunslet Hawks travel to take on Featherstone Rovers in what was a hard fought game, which was a battle of the defences.
It saw a fairly lopsided scoreline which didn’t perhaps recognise the passage of the game, Featherstone eventually running out winners 62-0. Superior ball handling and some excellent passing down the line saw Featherstone over run their hard working opponents. Featherstone began to build an unassailable lead with further tries following from Paula McCourt, Lindsay Anfield and Emily Rudge. Andrea Dobson produced a reliable performance with the boot kicking seven conversions in all. A great team performance from Featherstone though the Hunslet Hawks will feel slightly aggrieved with the emphatic nature of the scoreline and will feel their play deserved more.
The second fixture of the day saw Leigh Miners Rangers take on Wigan St Patricks. The game was a battle between two resolute defences and a gripping game saw the sides share the spoils with the score finishing 12-12. In a tight opening period Rachael Thompson found some space out wide to score and put Leigh ahead.
However Della Conroy soon wiped that out with the first of her two tries to bring the scores level going into half time. It was Leigh who took control early in the second half with tries from Claire Thompson and Leanne Johnson giving them a 12-4 lead and seemingly putting them in a strong position to take the win. With both sides playing 80 minutes for the first time, tiredness was bound to be a factor as the game creeped towards the closing stages.
It was Wigan who dealt with this better with Della Conroy scoring again to close the gap before Anna Aldridge levelled the scores right at the death.
Next week sees three fixtures taking place, with the Copeland Wildcats enjoying home advantage against Wigan St Patricks, Hunslet Hawks playing host to Leigh Miners Rangers, and Featherstone Rovers travelling to take on Bradford Clayton Thunderbirds.
