Brazilian Juliana Castro of Finasa attacks | Sao Paulo, Brazil, September 28, 2008 - Rexona-Ades of Rio de Janeiro debuted with an emotional victory in the Salonpas Cup, the annual international tournament of clubs. The defending champions defeated Italian team Scavolini Pesaro 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 27-25 in 1 hour and 51 minutes.
They outplayed their opponents in the blocking category 17-9 with Fabiana Claudino and Regiane Bidias recording five and four, respectively.
In the first match of Sunday, Finasa-Osasco of Brazil had an easy ride against Kinder Voleibol of Portugal, winning 25-8, 25-4, 25-13 in just 58 minutes to take its second victory in as many days.
Joyce Silva scored 23 points in leading five players from Rexona-Ades into double figures. Fabiana and Erika Coimbra each had 15 points, with Fabiana recording five blocks. Bidias had 14 and Caroline Gattaz added 10. Poland's Katarzyna Skowronska led the losers with 22.
Adenizia Silva was the top scorer for Finasa-Osasco with 12 points and Juliana Castro and Barbara Bruch added 10 apiece.
Rexona-Ades Head Coach Helio Griner said: "We had many up and downs but we could work out our blocking and now we have to continue improving other fundaments and thus to keep going on."
For Juliana Castro, the most important thing of their easy triumph was to show coach Luizomar de Moura that he can always count on all the players in the squad. "For me, all the players are starters and can get in to play at any moment they are needed," she said.
On Monday, Kinder Voleibol play Scavolini-Pesaro and Rexona-Ades go against Dominican’s Centro Deportivo. |
