The $30,000 Queensland Open remains a lottery following today’s (1/8) quarter-finals of the women’s singles with any one of the four remaining players capable of hoisting the trophy aloft.
Following the demise of world number four Kelsey Cottrell and world number six Karen Murphy, Tasmania’s Bec Quail, the 2009 champion, will assume slight favourtism, but little separates the semi-finalists.
During another dramatic day on the Ipswich greens, Quail moved within two wins of a second Queensland Open crown when she defeated Murphy in straight sets and will now clash with Australian teammate Anne Johns for a berth in the final.
In the opposite semi-final, former Scottish international Kay Moran will go head-to-head with Australian under-25 representative Sarah Boddington after eliminating Cottrell in devastating circumstances with her final bowl of the tie-break.
Down match, and with little room to move, the pint-size Scot capitalized on the moment to move through to the final four.
“It’s been a tricky tournament that’s for sure,” Quail said.
“That’s probably been my best all-round game so far, so it would be nice to keep it going.
“I always love playing the Queensland Open, which is unusual for a Tasmanian at this time of year with our greens closed, but I think after a bit of a rest I’m chomping at the bit.”
