Queensland has once again demonstrated its might on the national lawn bowls stage after clean sweeping the major accolades at the Australian Under-18 Championships at Broadbeach today (30/9).
During another dominate performance, the Maroons finished with one gold, five silver and two bronze medals from the eight disciplines, as well as the boys, girls and overall trophies.
In the blue-ribbon girls’ singles, Western Australia’s Kristina Krstic added yet another chapter to her decorated career with a 21-6 victory over South Australia’s Breeanna Dickson.
Having represented the Sandgropers at senior level earlier this year, Kristic, 16, who caused a sensation in October when she became the youngest ever winner on the Bowls Australia grand prix circuit following her victory at the NSW Open, claimed her second medal of the tournament after winning bronze in the pairs.
On the adjacent rink, two-time defending champion Carly Griffiths secured bronze for Queensland with a hard-fought 21-16 victory over NSW’s Kenita Monks,
The final medals were won in the girls’ fours, with NSW’s Dawn Hayman, Claire Bennell, Rebekah Ramsay and Claire Anderson downing the Maroons’ Natasha Jones, Lauren Wilson, Cassandra Millerick and Elizabeth McKillop 18-8 for the gold and Western Australia’s Ashayla Johnson, Rechelle Cole, Jaimee Lim and Kelli Rogalski securing a 20-15 win against Tasmania’s Caitlyn Hooper, Georgina Jones, Kiara Daly and Bree-Anne Mabb for the bronze.
Such was the evenness of the girls’ competition that Queensland required a count back on games won to edge out South Australia, while its boys’ outfit snuck across the line against NSW by a solitary point.
